WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits

About the course

This course is addressed to wine enthusiasts and professionals who have either no or basic knowledge about wines and grape varieties and aim at getting a basic, but well-structured introduction to the world of wines and spirits. Through an engaging and informative course, students will explore the major grape varieties and important wine regions and denominations that define the key styles of wines.

You will learn about wine production and key labeling terms to identify wines and spirits easily and to give basic advice about the proper selection and service of these products.  After the course, you will also describe wine in an easy, but structured way through sight, smell and taste thanks to a systematic approach and you will be able to apply these principles to everyday life and work.  A basic introduction to the main spirits styles is also provided.
No prior knowledge is required. The course will be delivered in English, so a good level of English is beneficial. Students completely new to wine and spirits study may wish to complete the Level 1 Award in Wines first. However, this is not essential.

Note: You will be expected to read the provided text book before attending the classes. The study material will be delivered by courier to students after the enrollment onto the course. This is a classroom delivery course and it requires both attendance and self-study time. Students are expected to dedicate a minimum of 12 hours to study time outside of the classroom.

After successfully passing the final exam, students will receive a WSET Certificate and a lapel pin.

1. Factors affecting the style of wine:

  • Environmental factors
  • Viticulture: how grapes are grown
  • Vinification: how wine is made
  • Ageing

2. Grape Varieties:

  • The key white and black grape varieties and their characteristics
  • The important wine-producing regions of the world in which these grapes are grown

3. Wine-producing regions:

  • Styles of wine produced and labeling terms

4. The production of sweet, sparkling and fortified wines

5. Food and Wine Pairings:

  • Identification of the main key principles of food and wine pairings
  • Matching wine styles with food depending on the principle interactions and personal preferences

6. How to Store and Serve Wine:

  • Identification and description of the basic principles for a correct service and storage

7. Responsible Drinking:

  • Description of the legal, social, health and security issues related to wine consumption

8. Learn how to describe a wine through the WSET Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT):

  • Learn how to describe a wine through a tutored tasting of 47 samples

9. Spirits and liqueurs:

  • Principle categories
  • Production of the main styles
  • Labeling terms

About the exam

In order to obtain the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits certificate, students must sit a final exam consisting of 50 multiple choice questions to be completed in one hour. To pass, students must answer 55% of the questions correctly.

Cost of the Course
